ECHO 8 by Sharon Lynn Fisher

2011 RWA Golden Heart® Finalist

The fate of two worlds hangs in the balance as three lives entangle: Jake, a man shifted to an alternate Earth, where he must drain energy from others to survive. Tess, the parapsychologist trying to save him. Ross, the FBI agent torn between duty and his love for Tess.

Jake Explains

I could feel you, long before I touched you. Your warmth. Your energy. Something emanated out of you, like a field of tangible light. Warm and amber. Thick like honey. I didn’t understand what it was, but I knew that I needed it. When I touched you, I plunged into molten light. It enveloped me, seeping into my pores. I tasted you on my tongue, in the back of my throat. Felt you pulsing through my veins. Along my nerve fibers. I wanted more. I wanted all of you.

Ross & The Important Thing

Ross suddenly realized the important thing he’d missed in all the chaos of noise in his head -- in the panic over his complete loss of control, and in the confusion of voices alternately lecturing him about duty and consistency, loyalty and love. He had to go after Tess because he loved her, because he was physically desperate for her, and because she was right. If she wanted to be with Jake, Ross would let her go, but before that the Bureau had to listen to her. Ross had to bring her back and make them listen to her.

If she was still alive.

Tess's Confession

Shock knotted her vocal cords. Ross had just offered her the thing she most needed from him -- a thing that could jeopardize his career -- with no strings attached. She couldn’t leave him in the dark about her feelings any longer.

She flattened her palms against his chest and dropped her eyes, trying to recover her voice.

“You don’t have to decide right now,” said Ross. “About Jake I mean.”

“No,” she laughed, shaking her head. “I don’t need time. I just…” She lifted her gaze to his face. “Falling in love with a man, let alone two men -- I honestly wasn’t sure it would ever happen to me.”

His arms tightened around her. She continued, “My heart is breaking over Jake. But you make me feel whole. You make me ache with loving and wanting. You make me want to hold onto life.”

“Tess,” he hissed, pulling her against him. She felt the tension trip along his muscles.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, brushing her lips against his earlobe. A shock of desire shot through her. “I love you,” she whispered.

EXCERPTS: From the Echo Dossier

Though they have proven malignant thus far,
I’m convinced they are not malign.
They are not murderous by nature.
We’re dealing with a survival instinct.

TEASERS: Quantum-Psi Connection

Quantum theory successfully describes physical behavior
from the atomic to cosmological domains…
It would be astonishingly unlikely to find that one small domain,
the one that our bodies and mind happen to inhabit,
are somehow not best described as quantum objects.
